Nehemiah 4:1-6

COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT

Does God at times call on us to be "completely irrelevant?" I believe He does. There are times we must speak our faith even though it may seem to those around us as the greatest nonsense imaginable. In a day like those in which we live, we listen to news broadcast after news broadcast in which the media people try to convince us that old fashioned morality is irrelevant. Particularly with regard to the current presidential crisis (reference is to President Clinton's facing impeachment during his administration), we are told that a president's morality is not as important as his job performance rating. Morality is nice, but it is irrelevant.

I must confess that one of the things that bother me tremendously is that I never want to seem irrelevant. To stand up for my faith and become, at times courageously irrelevant I need God's help. In the Scripture for today, Nehemiah's courage in leading the Jews return from the Babylonian Captivity and the restoration of the walls of Jerusalem is described. He had to listen to ridicule and the charge of being irrelevant brought by leaders who wanted to discourage and dissuade the rebuilders of Jerusalem. Nehemiah is an example of one who was willing to seem completely irrelevant in the eyes of his enemies to be true to the God he served. He is an example for me! Father Henri Nouwen was right when he wrote, "I am deeply convinced that the Christian leader of the future is called to be completely irrelevant and to stand in this world with nothing to offer but his or her own vulnerable self."

Dear Lord Jesus, behold my fearfulness and my lack of courage, and my ever-present desire to always be relevant in my world and among the people with whom I interact. Give me Your strength and courage to know and stand for the truth You impart to me, courageously - and even irrelevantly, if necessary!
